Heat pump water heaters use electricity to pull heat from the surrounding air and transfer it into a hot water tank. It looks similar to a traditional tall, cylindrical electric water heater tank but has a larger top (or side) section that houses the heat pump components.

These days, when our hot water goes out on us, it is more than an inconvenience. Our lifestyles depend on hot water in our daily routines. In fact, we are so dependent upon it, water heating ranks second to only space heating for highest energy consumption in the United States.

It’s a terrible moment when you step into the shower and find you have no hot water. Best case scenario—your spouse just ran a load of white clothes on hot in the washing machine, turned on the dishwasher, and took a leisurely hot shower a few minutes ago.
